AliExpress Choice Tariff — When You Pay and When You Don’t
AliExpress Choice is the platform’s curated, faster-shipping program. The marketing implies a smoother experience — but does that include skipping tariffs? The honest answer: only when the item ships from a local warehouse. Here’s how to tell.
The two flavors of Choice
1. Choice — Local warehouse (tariff-free)
AliExpress operates fulfillment centers in the US, UK, Spain, Germany, France, Brazil, and Saudi Arabia (with more coming). Items pre-stocked there ship domestically when ordered. Because no international border is crossed, no import duty applies.
These items often arrive in 3–7 days instead of 15–30. Sticker price is usually higher than the same item from China — but you save on tariffs and time.
2. Choice — Cross-border (regular tariffs apply)
Most Choice items still ship from China. The "Choice" label here means: faster than standard, consolidated logistics, AliExpress-handled customer service. But customs treats the parcel like any other China-origin order. Full duty + VAT apply.
How to identify each type
On the product page, scroll to the shipping panel. Look for these signals:
- "Ships from: United States" (or your country) + delivery in 3–7 days → local warehouse, tariff-free.
- "Ships from: China" + delivery in 10–25 days → cross-border, tariffs apply.
- "Tax included" badge (EU/UK only) → VAT collected by AliExpress at checkout.
- Choice logo + "Free shipping" alone doesn’t mean local — always check the shipping origin.
A worked example: $25 phone case
Option A — Cross-border Choice from China to the US:
- Sticker: $25 + $2 shipping = $27
- Under $800 de-minimis → no federal tariff
- State sales tax (collected by AliExpress): ~$2
- Total landed: $29. Delivery: 18 days.
Option B — Choice Local US warehouse:
- Sticker: $30 + $0 shipping (free) = $30
- Domestic — no tariff possible
- State sales tax: ~$2.40
- Total landed: $32.40. Delivery: 4 days.
Option A is cheaper by $3.40 and slower by 14 days. Most US shoppers under $800 should take Option A; over $800, Option B becomes cheaper because the tariff hit on cross-border outweighs the price premium.
When Choice Local genuinely beats China-direct
- Order > your country’s de-minimis. Tariff savings dwarf the sticker premium.
- You need it fast. 4-day vs 18-day matters for time-sensitive purchases.
- You hate surprise customs bills. Local warehouse = zero customs interaction.
- You’re in Brazil. Choice Local Brazil saves you from the 60% remessa.
Edge cases
- "Ships from China — Choice — Tax included" (EU): Best of both worlds for EU buyers under €150. VAT pre-paid, fast Choice logistics.
- Mixed-warehouse orders: If you order multiple Choice items, some may ship local and others from China. Each parcel is treated independently for customs.
- Returns from local warehouses: Easier than China returns, but check the return window (often 15 days vs 90).
Run our calculator on a Choice product URL to see the actual landed cost — we detect the warehouse origin where possible and adjust the duty calculation.

FAQ
Do AliExpress Choice items have tariffs?▾
It depends on the warehouse. Choice items shipped from a local warehouse in your country (e.g. US warehouse to a US buyer) are domestic — no tariffs. Choice items shipped cross-border from China still attract the same import duty + VAT as any other AliExpress order.
How can I tell if a Choice item ships locally?▾
On the product page, look at the shipping section. It will say "Ships from: United States" (or your country) for local fulfillment. If it says "Ships from: China" — same tariff treatment as a regular AliExpress order.
Is AliExpress Choice always cheaper after tariffs?▾
Not always. Choice often has a higher sticker price than non-Choice for the same item. The savings come from no tariffs (when local) and no surprise customs bills. Run our calculator to compare apples to apples.
Why does AliExpress push Choice so hard?▾
Choice has higher AliExpress margin and far fewer customs disputes. They’re scaling local warehouses precisely to dodge the tariff issue that drove customers away in 2024–2025.
