What is Taobao, and why do tariffs apply?

Taobao is Alibaba Group’s domestic-China consumer marketplace — the platform every Chinese citizen uses for everyday shopping. International buyers reach Taobao through a forwarder (Superbuy, Pandabuy, CSSBuy, etc.) or via the official world.taobao.com cross-border channel.

Tariff math on Taobao is two-step: first your forwarder consolidates and reships from China, then your country’s customs applies duty + VAT on the consolidated parcel. The forwarder fee, second-leg freight, and consolidation savings all change the landed cost.

Diff #3

Taobao FAQ

How does Taobao shipping work for international buyers?+

Most international buyers use a forwarder. You ship goods to a warehouse in China, the forwarder consolidates and reships internationally. You pay (a) Taobao price, (b) China domestic shipping, (c) forwarder service fee, (d) international shipping, (e) destination duty + VAT.

Can my country charge duty on a Taobao forwarder parcel?+

Yes. Once it crosses your border it is treated like any other cross-border parcel. The declared value the forwarder writes determines your duty bill — request undervaluation at your own risk.

Why is Taobao cheaper than AliExpress for the same item?+

Taobao prices are domestic-Chinese — they don’t include cross-border listing fees, payment-processing markups, or returns insurance. AliExpress adds 10–25% on top of equivalent Taobao prices to fund those services.

Is world.taobao.com better than using a forwarder?+

For low-value, single-item orders, yes — less hassle. For higher volume or category-specific items not in world.taobao.com, a forwarder is still cheaper.
